The definition of value
Value is a frequently used word. We often use it for what has economic value, or we use it to refer to people and actions that have to do with acts of heroism and extreme selflessness (civilian and military medals of valor). According to the thought of Japanese pedagogue Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944), value is the synthesis of beauty, gain and good. We create value when we act to improve our physical and spiritual aesthetics (beauty), to gain tangible benefits in our lives (gain) and to contribute to the welfare of the community (good). On Wikipedia we read that “Makiguchi’s main goal was to reform the educational system of the time, which, in his view, stifled students’ creativity and happiness. He argued that happiness should be the purpose of human life and, therefore, the first goal of education. Makiguchi was convinced that true happiness was found in the creation of value.” Makiguchi dedicated his life to instilling value in his work as a teacher because he firmly believed that valuable education would lay the foundation for the happiness of every individual and, consequently, of all humanity.
