Exhibition “Senzatomica” in Florence

Italian version
“… Friday, Jan. 31, is the first day for the exhibition “Senzatomica. Transforming the human spirit for a world free of nuclear weapons,” at the Refectory of Santa Maria Novella, Station Square 6, Florence. The exhibition, made possible thanks to 8×1000 funds from the Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai, offers an “immersive” visit to the places of memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki through a viewer and the experiences of “hibakusha,” the survivors of the atomic bomb blast…” (Source https://www.sgi-italia.org/firenze-inaugurata-la-mostra-senzatomica/. )

Perhaps not everyone knows that as of 2021, The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is in effect. This is an international treaty that makes nuclear weapons illegal on a path toward their complete elimination. The treaty states unequivocally that the complete elimination of nuclear weapons is the only way to ensure that they are never used, under any circumstances. The lengthy negotiations that gave birth to the treaty saw the commendable effort of many individuals and associations including ICAN, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning campaign) .
The treaty entered into force in January 2021 after being ratified by at least 50 UN member states. At the moment it has obviously not been signed by states that have nuclear arsenals, but it is a key step that enshrines the will to eliminate the threat of nuclear war.
The exhibition will remain open until March 23, 2025. I believe that this exhibition is a wonderful example of how the memory of a tragedy is not limited to looking back in horror at the brutalities of the past, but is transformed into constant effort and effective action for a better future.
