The poem “A life together”
Last year in January, my father Giampiero passed away. In the days following his death, I felt much gratitude for the example of married love that Dad and Mom witnessed with their lives. I believe their story is common to many married couples in the 1960s. Dad started working at age 18, sailing around the world. Mom devoted herself to taking care of the family. With unity and love, they faced joys and sorrows, including the last and most difficult test.
Dad fell ill with dementia in 2012, and Mom cared for him for 12 years without giving up, without complaining, showing that genuine love can instill incredible fortitude. She cared for Dad relentlessly, and stood by him even in the time of separation.
On the evening of Father’s death, as I was praying for him, the short poem “A Life Together” surfaced in my mind, summarizing their experience of love in a few lines.
At the height of his youth
Giampiero waits anxiously for his love
At the tailor’s shop exit,
With a beating heart.
At the end of his life
Giampiero squeezes his love’s hand tightly,
with his heart slowly stopping.
In between, a life together.
Following the emotion of those days, I asked my friend Paolo Neri to paint a picture. I think it is a wonderful caption of their love.
